15 Things You Should Do Right After Moving In

Tips After You Move In | Hug Condon

You finally did it! You found the perfect new place to rest your head at night, all of your stuff has arrived safe and sound, and you’re ready to start life in your new home. What should you do first? Well, it isn’t always as simple as starting to unpack the first box. Here are our professional tips for what to do after you move into a new place:

1) Set Up Your Utilities

If you didn’t do this already, then living in your new place is going to be inconvenient quickly! Make sure that your Internet, gas, electricity, cable, etc., are all ready for you, otherwise it’s going to be nothing but books and cold showers.

2) Change Your Locks

The first thing you want to do after making sure your home’s pipes aren’t going to freeze from lack of heat is to change your locks. Otherwise, people who might still innocently have a key to your new place could access it.

3) Plug-In Your Appliances

Since your major appliances are so important, you need to make sure that they’re all in working order before the smaller stuff comes out of their boxes.

4) Inspect Your Boxes

Speaking of boxes, it’s always good to make sure that you have all of the items you want for your new home. We suggest making careful notes on the boxes for where they are supposed to go in each room to make the process faster.

5) Unpack Your Essentials Before Anything Else

Unpacking is best done as a process, not all at once. Keeping yourself working slowly makes sure that everything gets put in its place while keeping you not overwhelmed. Therefore, take your most used items out of their boxes first.

6) Get Organized

Think about what you want to accomplish first, and even write it down before you start. You don’t want to get overburdened by all of the things that you want to do in your home.

7) Childproof Your New Place

If you’re a parent with small children, then you’ll know how quickly your little ones can discover even the most unexpected of things around them. Make sure that the edges of furniture, light sockets, and hearths are all guarded against their investigations.

8) Learn Your Home

There are always a few things about new places that people don’t know yet. Therefore, it’s important to understand things like how a fuse box works, how gas valves turn on and off, and how water valves control the flow of water through your home.

9) Recycle Packing Materials

Make sure not to just throw away your cardboard boxes when they can be easily recycled. Frequently, your new area will have information online on how to best recycle cardboard.

10) Go Grocery Shopping

Make sure that you pick up all of the food that you require for your personal tastes. Items like spices and old condiments might have been thrown away prior to the move. Therefore, it’s a good idea to restock in your new digs.

11) Acclimate Your Pets

With your shopping out of the way, it’s a good plan to make sure that your fur babies are properly welcome in the new community. Scout out the local dog parks and walk your pet frequently so they can meet their new friends.

12) Unpack and Organize

After unpacking the essentials and stocking up on food, it’s wise to set a timetable for getting the rest of your boxes unpacked. We suggest that two weeks be your sweet spot for finishing the unpacking job. That way, you can get the most use out of your home while still getting organized at the same time!

13) Update Your Address

The last thing you want is something from eBay going to the old address! Oh, and we guess that it’s important to get the bills, too.

14) Meet Your Neighbors

You’ve just rolled into town, and you’ll want to get to know the people around you. A good place to start is by throwing a housewarming party or by making frequent outings to the public use areas to see what’s going on in your new world.

15) Have Fun!

The best part about living someplace new is that you can have a whole new start to life. New schools, workplaces, friendships, and more all await you. Utilize your home as a base of operations and start living your life to the fullest!
